Angus Wishart - “I am a primarily self-taught artist in the Bass Coast Shire/Bunurong Country. The works in this collection are all painted en plain air (on scene) - look closely and you will probably see the odd grain of sand or grass seed. This method of direct painting in the landscape imbues the work with the freshness, vitality and clarity of the outside world. Working in the open air, there is an urgency in the laying down of paint to capture as much of the scene in as little time as possible before the conditions change (and in southern Victoria that can be a matter of minutes!). It is this broad, loose brushwork which gives life to the work and, when the viewer takes a step back, coalesces to create a sense of calm.

Ultimately I am a tonal painter which means I am aiming to capture light above all else -it is the central element I am always pursuing, the spur that draws me to paint a scene. Wether it is a wave lit from behind or a shadow cast across the snow, my perpetual muse is not then landscape itself but the play of light within it.”
