Ulises Resendiz is a symbolic/surreal artist from Mexico, now based in St. Kilda, Melbourne. “I experiment with bright colours juxtaposing confronting ideas, sad and happy subjects mixed together with impossible things. Since I move to Australia I have been inspired by different symbols from both Mexico and Australia mixing animals, plants and other subjects.”

Ulises artworks are mostly watercolours and acrylic paintings and paper mache and fabric sculptures.

The Alebrijes are imaginary creatures that have elements from different animals such as dragon bodies, bat wings, wolf teeth and dog eyes. Colorfully painted, they were originally made with papier mache but nowadays they are also wood carved.

This sculpture was done with my mother’s help; she sewed, in Mexico, all the parts of the body independently, as per my drawings. I brought the pieces (flat) to Australia and in my studio, I filled them up and put together. I loved that we worked together.
